What's new at LUMC?
It is time once again for the holy observance of Lent. As you may recall, “Lent” is an old English word meaning spring. Even though it’s hard to even think of spring when the weather is so cold and the snow is flying, Lent will lead us to the religious ushering in of Spring through Easter. However, Lent is more than just a 40 day period (not counting Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Easter. It is more than a time to recall Jesus’ temptation by Satan. It is more than a holy season. Lent is a time for us to give serious consideration to the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us. Lent is a time of spiritual recentering and refocusing. It is a time for us to slow our pace just a bit so that we can invest time and energy in giving God thanks for sending our Savior to the cross. So how will you make Lent “something more”? Traditionally, persons sacrifice something throughout Lent. Maybe you could do without chocolate or pop? Maybe you could cut out any eating after 7 PM? Maybe you could fast for an entire day each week? We can also sacrifice our time by covenanting with God to get up an hour earlier every day to invest in prayer and Bible study. The point of these sacrifices and spiritual disciplines is to remind us of the great sacrifice Christ made for us. Believe me, if you give up something this Lent, it will be an extreme blessing. Every time you want that chocolate bar or midnight snack, you will pause to remember Christ’s great sacrifice and decide that your craving isn’t really that important.
